Agricultural development, rural innovation

25 years of construction and development, Binh Duong has achieved proud achievements in all socio-economic fields. In particular, the province’s agriculture and rural development has changed vigorously, contributing to improving the material and spiritual lives of people in rural areas.

Towards modern agriculture

Binh Duong has a total natural area of nearly 270,000 hectares, including nearly 200,000 hectares of agro-forestry land. With natural conditions, favorable climate..., the province's agricultural sector developed obviously over the past time. Finding out consumption markets and improving the value of agricultural products, especially specialty fruits towards export have always been an important goal of the province. Although being an industrial locality, Binh Duong has always focused on developing agricultural production with proportion accounting for only 3% of the local economic structure. Up to now, the local agricultural sector has reaped many encouraging achievements, especially the scale of livestock production, fruit orchards, and agricultural products under the high-tech application process, bringing high-economic values, contributing to the local overall achievements.

The agriculture and rural development sector has continuously achieved many high and sustainable results. In picture: An Binh A primary school in Phu Giao district’s An Binh commune

The local area for agricultural production is gradually narrowed and the proportion of the sector is decreasing in the local economic structure, due to rapid industrial and urban development. However, the added value of the local agriculture, forestry and fisheries has still increased by 2.74% per year. The local agricultural structure has been shifted towards urban and hi-tech agriculture. The sector’s animal husbandry is gradually shifting to a large-scale concentrated industrial model, improving the value of products, expanding consumption markets, applying closed processes to ensure disease safety, high economic efficiency and high economic value. The local agricultural production value has reached over 100 million per hectare per year. In 2020, the province focused on investing and speeding up the implementation of 2 zones and 2 projects on hi-tech agriculture with a total area of 979 hectares, a total investment of nearly VND 1trillion. There are 5,000 hectares of farming land for urban and hi-tech agricultural production with many models bringing high economic efficiency with revenue of more than VND 3 billion per hectare per year.

The province has made breakthroughs in restructuring agriculture and carrying out policies for development, thereby creating a mechanism to attract enterprises and farmers, creating a new bounce from the existing potential. The shift of plant structure towards expanding the area of plants with high economic value in line with the local soil conditions and reducing plants with low economic value has been implemented in the right direction. The transfer and application of sci-tech advancements to agricultural production have been focused on implementation and achieved many positive results. Up to now, the province has developed four hi-tech agricultural parks, with over 68% of total poultry herd, 63% of total cattle herd and 5,700 hectares of cultivation applying high technology in production. Of these, there are nearly 600 hectares of organic cultivation.

Countryside flourishing

With the development of agricultural economy plus the attention of investment from State budget and the active response of the people, the local electrification and modernization process of agriculture and rural development has taken place rapidly. After more than 10 years of implementing the National Target Program on building new-style rural areas, the province reached achievements, greatly contributing to the local socio-economic development. The program has completely changed the local image of agriculture, rural areas and farmers.

The province’s modern countryside has contributed to improving the lives of people and developing agriculture towards modernity. By 2020, all 49 communes of the province were recognized as ones meeting new rural standards, one year earlier than planned, which was highly appreciated by the Government. Currently, the province has 7 communes recognized as ones meeting advanced newly-style rural criteria; 1 district and 2 townships recognized as ones reaching new-style rural criteria and 1 town completing the task of new-style rural development. The average income per capita of people in new-style rural communes in 2021 is VND71 million per person per year.

Returning to the rural communes of the province, it is sure that we are all surprised by their changes. Those are hot asphalt roads upgraded to replace red dirt ones, connecting urban centers with rural areas. Many new spacious houses along with a series of welfare facilities such as markets, schools, medical centers, cultural institutions, etc., have been put into use, contributing to improving the material and spiritual lives of rural people.

Witnessing the obvious change of his homeland after 25 years of construction, Nguyen Van Bay in Phu Giao district’s An Thai commune said: “Up to now, the local system of electricity, roads, schools and stations are all clean and beautiful. The material and spiritual lives of the local people has been continuously improved. I am prouder when An Thai has completed criteria of an advanced new-style rural commune by the end of 2020”.

Pham Van Bong, Director of provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that Binh Duong has continued building new-style rural areas on the basis of sustainable and safe agricultural development in the direction of large-scale, high-tech application towards organic agriculture and biosafety animal husbandry. The sector will continue supporting and encouraging the development of high-tech and sustainable agricultural production associated with environmental protection; focus on building and replicating production models under their value chain, creating a development step in the direction of goods reaching productivity, quality and food safety; improve the quality of new-style rural communes under the set of advanced criteria, build smart villages to ensure a prosperous and civilized countryside, and rich farmers, which is the goal set out by the province in the next period. (To be continued)

*Mai Hung Dung, member of provincial Party Standing Committee, Vice-Chairman of provincial People's Committee: Binh Duong's new-style rural construction program has had very creative steps. Thanks to the determination of the Party, authorities at all levels and the consensus of the people, the province's new-style rural construction program has brought about positive results. Building new-style rural areas is a regular and continuous process with the main purpose of improving the lives of rural residents. On the basis of achieved results, localities need to further focus on improving the quality of criteria, upholding good and creative ways in implementation so that the program on new-style rural construction brings more practical effectiveness, well serving the lives of rural residents.

*Nguyen Hong Quyet, Director of Kim Long Hi-tech Agriculture Cooperative in Phu Giao district’s An Binh commune: Enjoying many preferential policies for development of the province together with applying sci-tech advancements in growing netted muskmelons in greenhouses, the cooperative's products have achieved high quality and been recognized as the unit meeting VietGAP standards with stable consumption nationwide. Every year, the cooperative produces and supplies over 200 tons of netted muskmelons to the market, with the annual revenue of over VND 10 billion per year, creating regular jobs for more than 60 workers, with the monthly average income of VND6million and VND6.5million per person.

*Nguyen Tien Trung in Dau Tieng district’s Dinh Hiep commune: The image about the lives of rural people has changed a lot because of road, lighting and telecommunications networks improved. My family as well as people in the commune are happier. The roads herein are more convenient. The local people have conditions to repair and build new houses and their lives get more and more affluent.
