Family members of victims cry near the landslide debris in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, April 7, 2010.
At least 200 people have been buried in a mudslide that hit Niteroi late Wednesday, local Civil Defense subsecretary Pedro Machado said Thursday. The mudslide plowed into a slum in Niteroi and most likely killed the victims instantly, Machado told Globo television.
Niteroi lies across the bay from the state capital and is part of the greater Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area.
Record rain has been pouring in the Rio region since Monday, triggering constant mudslides.
The official death toll now stands at 153 but was expected to rise sharply after Wednesday night's mudslide. Brazil's southeastern region has been battered by the heaviest rain and floods in almost half a century.
