Ho Chi Minh City’s Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (IHBT) on February 2 put into operation the nation’s biggest blood bank with a total capacity of 300,000 units per year.
The blood bank is modernly-equipped for blood testing, storing and preservation. In addition, it has a bank for umbilical cord blood that can preserve 10,000 umbilical units, equivalent to the national umbilical cord blood bank.
The international standard blood bank was built on 4,200 square metres with a total capital of VND89.6 billion, said Nguyen Tan Binh, director Ho Chi Minh City’s IHBT.
Human resources for the bank were trained in developed countries like the US, Belgium, France, and Singapore who will work to ensure high-quality blood for hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City and in neighbouring provinces.
On the same day, Ho Chi Minh City’s Hospital for Tropical Diseases opened three infectious disease departments covering 6,000 square metres.
