Consumers need to speak up

The competent authorities often mention the issue of tax collection for online trading activities, but has not given much warning about product quality through e-commerce transactions, control solutions.

Regarding this issue, recently a representative of Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy (Ministry of Industry and Trade), said that currently, ASEAN E-commerce Coordinating Committee had issued guidelines related to the responsibilities of online intermediaries to regulate processes of online buying and selling products and responsibilities of the exchange, the seller, to ensure the interests of consumers. In addition, according to E-commerce Agreement within ASEAN signed, there are provisions related to online consumer protection as well as provisions related to privacy of personal information.

The Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy has an e-commerce management website, and consumers may report fraudulent websites (or products). Based on that, Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy will carry out inspections to verify, from which there are clear sanctioning directions to strengthen trust from consumers.

Apart from management measures of authorities, each e-commerce exchanging floor is also applying its own management policies to protect consumers. For example, e-commerce platform Shopee has set up a function to report infringing products to help consumers report information, thereby measures taken to handle according to regulations.

However, along with the involvement of authorities and businesses, it is still necessary for consumers to join hands in warning against counterfeit and counterfeit products to make the market healthy. It is expected that in the coming time, with the platforms and efforts of the parties, it will form a new culture in online shopping, an inevitable trend of the digital age.
