Customers ponder on price hike of confectionery products for Tet

Shoppers ponder on goods’ price hike for Tet.

The shopping season for Tet festival just starts but prices of products for Tet have skyrocketed with an increase of 10-20% over normal days.

Prices skyrocketing

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Phung in Thu Dau Mot town’s Phu My ward was very surprised with the jump of confectionery prices. According to confectionery agents, it is because sugar price’s impacts. However, this explanation is unreasonable because prices of melon seed and chenust also surge sharply.

In the days near Tet, prices of goods are expected to increase one more time. The price of sugar has increased by VND4,000 to VND5,000 per kilo compared to the price posted two months ago, which is being sold at VND19,000 per kilo, a double rise from last year. The increase in price for various kinds of confectionery products is unavoidable because the sugar price makes up 30 per cent of candy products. Melon seed now prices at VND80-120,000 per kilo, a two-fold increase compared to last year.

Meanwhile, beer and soft drink always are in top ten products of price hike. Heineken beer price is now sold at VND340,000 per box of 24 beer cans, 333 beer at VND230,000 per box whilst Coca Cola soft drink at VND140,000 per box.

Vietnamese goods controls market

The imported confectionery products’ price hike will help domestic products control market. With reasonable prices and pattern and quality equivalent to imported products, made-in-Vietnam confectionery products have been paid attention by shoppers at supermarkets, markets.

One more reason is that the mobilization of “Vietnamese customers use Vietnamese goods” has contributed to bring made-in-Vietnam products to people.

Tran Dat Tien, vice director of Citimart Binh Duong said many customers have gradually shifted to use Vietnamese goods, so the supermarket gives a priority to display locally made items.

To ensure the supply of goods for Tet season, local supermarkets planned to stockpile goods 3 months ago with the total value of over VND110bil. Of which, the number of items of confectionery, fresh foods increases double from last year.
