The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has designated its Rason special economic zone which borders Russia and China, as a special municipality, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on January 5.
The designation was made in a decree promulgated on January 4 by the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly.
Observers say the move aims to develop the north-eastern city into a gateway for trade with the two neighbouring countries and attract foreign investment.
During a visit to Rason last month, DPRK top leader Kim Jong Il asked the municipal administration to boost trade. This was Mr Kim’s first visit to the zone since it was established in 1991.
The DPRK and Russia have recently agreed to upgrade a cross-border railway line and improve seaport infrastructure in Rason. China has also explored opportunities for investment in the city.
In a New Year's Day editorial in its official press, the DPRK vowed to gain access to more foreign markets, promote trade activities and build a non-nuclear Korean peninsular.
