A top official from the European Union (EU) executive Monday stressed the need to find coordinated solution to the impact of volcanic ash clouds, which forced many European countries to close their airspace.
"We must facilitate co-ordinated European solutions if we are to find a way forwards," Siim Kalls, Vice President of the European Commission responsible for transport, told a press conference here in Brussels.

Kalls said Europe is faced with an unprecedented shutdown of airspace, stressing "this situation not sustainable."
"The most urgent task is to see if stronger European co-ordination of airspace management can maximise the airspace available without compromising safety," he said.
According to Kalls, the Commission and Eurocontrol are co-chairing an extraordinary meeting to try to deal with the issue.
EU transport ministers will also hold a video conference later on Monday afternoon to assess the impact of the volcanic ash which is maintaining shut down on air traffic in a large part of Europe.
