Local businesses to boost exports to Middle East, Africa

The potential of the Middle East and African markets and their main features in terms of geography, culture and consumption were introduced at a seminar in Ho Chi Minh City on June 10.

The seminar, held by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, drew economists and representatives of nearly 100 import and export businesses.

Attendees said trade between Vietnam and the Middle East hit US$2.16 billion in 2009 and Vietnam enjoyed a trade surplus of $0.1 billion.

For the African market, Vietnam exported US$1.56 billion worth of products in 2009, a 20 percent increase from 2008, but imported only US$508 million. Vietnam’s exports to Africa have expanded from mainly farm produce and seafood to include many other commodities such as computers, electronics, rubber, wood, wood products, and handicrafts.

Vietnam will continue to take measures to step up exports to these markets: vigorously promoting Vietnamese goods, taking part in fairs and exhibitions, organizing conferences for customers, sending trade delegations to study markets, and opening representative offices.

The seminar advised enterprises to learn more about trade barriers in these markets, their culture and customs and the differences in their communication, buying, and selling practices.
