To sustain position of Vietnamese commodities in domestic market

A talk on measures of improving the movements of Vietnamese prioritizing Vietnamese commodities in 2020 has just been held by Thuan An city Vietnamese Fatherland Front Committee to include the discussion about role of women in selecting Vietnamese commodities to purchase, orientation of youths to use domestic commodities, what domestic enterprises should do to win the heart of consumers, the measures against fake, low-quality, and intellectual property breaching goods, policies to support sustainable market development for Vietnamese enterprises and so on.

Fairs of Vietnamese commodities are frequently organized in remote areas and industrial parks and clusters to effectuate the movement of Vietnamese prioritizing Vietnamese commodities

Movement of difficulties

In 2020, the complicated developments of the Covid-19 epidemic has significantly affected the activities of organizing the movement of "Vietnamese prioritizing Vietnamese commodities" of the province in general and Thuan An city in particular. However, the attention and leadership of Thuan An city Party Committee, the coordination between agencies, departments, socio-political organizations, occupations, businesses and individuals have helped to diversify the movement forms in the city, creating the interest and response of the people and the business community.

Truong Cong Thach, Head of Economic Division of Thuan An city, said that in the first months of 2020, due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic, commercial activities in the movement and in the city have been generally in a quiet state.  As soon as the epidemic was basically controlled, in six months of the year, the locality has quickly promoted the implementation of the program to bring Vietnamese goods to workers at the Provincial Labor Culture Center (An Phu ward).  Thereby, mobile sales have been organized to serve at a 10% discount in addition to promotions or gifts with products introduced by participating businesses.  Although this activity was within only 3 days, it provided an opportunity for local workers and consumers to purchase essential consumer goods originating from Vietnam at affordable prices, avoiding the shortage of goods during the time of  Covid-19 epidemic.

Thuan An city has organized not only the above program but also other programs of the movement.  Particularly, Lotte Mart Binh Duong Supermarket set up more stalls for sales outside the supermarket on demand.  Binh Duong provincial Labor Union and cities organizes the preferential sales program for workers.  The Red Cross organized the charitable marketplace.  The convenient marts such as Vincom, Family Mart, Bach Hoa Xanh, and Co.opmart in communes and wards organized sales of goods of price stabilization.  Along with that, the city prioritized the implementation of popular activities on "Rights Day of Vietnamese consumers", “Supporting businesses to apply advanced machinery and equipment in production;  increasing the propagation to motels, markets, and small businesses” and so on. All activities aimed to create conditions for people to buy quality Vietnamese goods at reasonable prices, while promoting information disseminating and raising people's awareness of domestically produced goods.

Various measures

In fact, more and more Vietnamese people believe in using good quality products with domestic brands in general and Binh Duong in particular, especially Vinamilk, Viet Tien, Minh Long ceramics, Thanh Loc bamboo and rattan, etc.  Our survey shows that, during and after the Covid-19 epidemic, many consumers prefer domestic products, especially branded products, to ensure quality and safety for users.  A clearer demonstration is that many anti-epidemic products, anti-splash masks with antibacterial fabric produced domestically are the optimal choice of many people.  Huynh Thi Thao at Lai Thieu ward, Thuan An city, said: “In the face of Covid-19 epidemic, the Lotte Mart supermarket quickly met the supply of goods for consumers.  My family is completely assured when using antibacterial fabric masks from domestic companies which  are not only comfortable to use but at very reasonable price.” The survey also shows that the proportion of Vietnamese goods in large supermarkets, convenient stores and markets, and grocery stores is accounted for 70% or more.

Apparently, domestic trade promotion activities have stimulated consumption, supported businesses, and set up goods distribution channels to make the total turnover of retail goods and services in the locality be at high growth rate of 20% per year on average.  The movement has made positive changes in both production and consumption sectors.

However, to realize the dual goal in the current period is to both develop the economy and actively cope with epidemics, quickly recover and promote the domestic market, Vietnamese products to develop deeply and sustainably, the market is still in need of many solutions. Nguyen Thi Kim Thanh, Deputy Chairwoman of Vietnamese Fatherland Front Committee of An Thanh Ward, commented in the context of increasing competition and trade liberalization, many enterprises and manufacturers have not met the advanced requirements for quality and design.  On the other hand, many private enterprises are taking advantage of participating in organizing trade fairs in the name of bringing domestic goods to commit acts of trade fraud, consuming inventory, and counterfeit goods, affecting the  benefits and consumer confidence. Thereon, the practicality of the movement has been reduced.

Concurrently, the coordination of functional forces in some areas has not been really effective nor met the task of protecting consumers' interests.  Many companies have not focused on protecting their brands and the situation of counterfeit goods still exists.  Therefore, market management teams need to strengthen inspection and supervision to handle violations of quality, origin, price etc. especially during holidays, contributing to price stabilization and protection of interests of consumers.

Huynh Van Son, Permanent Deputy Secretary of Thuan An City Party Committee, said: “It is not difficult to see that the notion of liking foreign goods is still popular among the people, although there are Vietnamese products that can be completely replaced. However, the main reason is still due to a number of Vietnamese goods that are not really at high quality, and the prices are not reasonable. Thus, it leads to comparison by consumers when choosing what to buy.” According to Huynh Van Son, at present, the situation of food safety and hygiene is a particularly important issue, especially in the process of processing and preservation, which is not yet guaranteed.  Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen monitoring activities to early detect risks of food contamination.  At the same time, the inspection, post-inspection and public handling of violating establishments should be more drastic to withdraw production and business licenses of those violating.  This will enhance the responsibilities of businesses and ensure the interests of consumers.
