Toyota said Monday it has received a subpoena from a federal grand jury in New York demanding documents related to unintended acceleration complaints.
The carmaker also received a request and a subpoena for similar documents from the Los Angeles office of the Securities and Exchange Commission, according to Detnews.
The fallout continues to mount from Toyota's recall of nearly 9 million vehicles worldwide in recent months. The fact that the company could face a criminal prosecution raises the stakes when the company's top officials begin at least three days of hearings Tuesday in Congress.
Toyota said it received on Feb. 8 a subpoena from a federal grand jury in the Southern District of New York seeking "certain documents related to unintended acceleration of Toyota vehicles and the braking system of the Prius."
On Feb. 19, Toyota received a separate subpoena from the Los Angeles office of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, seeking production of certain documents, including those related to unintended acceleration of Toyota vehicles and the company's disclosure policies and practices.
Toyota said it intends "to cooperate with the investigations, and (we) are currently preparing their responses," Detnews reported.
Toyota has recalled 5.4 million vehicles over pedal entrapment issues and another 2.3 million over sticky pedal concerns. The company recalled 437,000 Prius vehicles worldwide over braking issues this month after secretly making a change to its software to address complaints.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has said it has received more than 2,000 complaints of sudden acceleration on Toyota vehicles, including allegations in 34 deaths.
