 After the resounding success from the centralized industrial economic model, Binh Duong today is continuing its development path in a new era. During this period, the province strives for the goal of building a smart city, sustainable development, considering people as the center of all development strategies.

The new city, the core area of Binh Duong Smart City is planned to be built on a large, methodical and modern scale.

 Long-term vision

After more than 25 years of being consistent with construction and economic development in the direction of investment attraction, building concentrated industry, in 2016, the province decided to make some strategic changes to continue developing in the new era. For example, the Project "Binh Duong Smart City" with the focus on building and consolidating Binh Duong Innovation Region, creating momentum for socio-economic development.

Dr. Nguyen Viet Long, Director of Provincial Department of Science and Technology, said that Smart City is a concept that has been mentioned many times, applies the advancement of science and technology to help increase the efficiency of daily-living activities, socio-economic activities of people, authorities and businesses. For this project to be most effective, social entities, such as: The State, schools, and businesses need to have close links and join hands to solve social problems.

As visiting and appraising the practical effectiveness of smart city projects and innovative projects in the province at the end of June 2022, Louis Zacharilla, Co-Founder of Intelligent Community Forum (ICF), said he highly appreciated Binh Duong's efforts. ICF leaders found that Binh Duong is now on the right track, and with high determination, the province would succeed in building a smart city.

As a person who regularly follow political, economic and social information, Nguyen Xuan Phuong, a resident of Hoa Phu ward in Thu Dau Mot City, said he felt very proud and often shared the socio-economic achievements of the province with his friends. Especially, for many consecutive years, Binh Duong has been recognized as the locality having a typical smart city development strategy by ICF. "Hopefully, in the coming time, the province would continue to implement and complete the project's construction goals to make people's lives more convenient," Phuong expected.

Not only creating a more convenient and modern life for people, the "Binh Duong Smart City" project also contributes to promoting digital transformation in the state environment and business community. Specifically, in recent years, many agencies, organizations and enterprises in the province have changed their operations from traditional to technology application. This has helped agencies, organizations and enterprises save time, costs and labor, and increase work efficiency from 20 to 80% compared to before.

Le Dac Thanh, a technology engineer of an enterprise specializing in processing and manufacturing computer and phone components, based in VSIP 2, said previously when their production line had not been upgraded, many professional phases had to be done manually. This causes waste of time, costs and human resources, making the company's sales and profits not high. However, since the automatic production line was put into operation, work efficiency has increased significantly. Despite being affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, in 2021, the company guaranteed and fulfilled orders of partners.

Smart in many areas

In the mid-August 2022, the road along Saigon River has been connected to the area of Bach Dang River, passing through Phu Cuong ward of Thu Dau Mot City.

From an agricultural locality, Binh Duong hometown, with the efforts and perseverance of many generations, has become one of the civilized, modern and worth-living cities in the southern key economic region.

Nguyen Van Tot, a resident of Phu Hoa ward in Thu Dau Mot City, said he was really impressed with the change of his hometown. Compared to the early days, the development of the province today is beyond imagination. “The road system is spacious, clean and beautiful, people travel safely and comfortably. If you want to shop, eat or entertain, it's easy to find many shops and restaurants near your home that are very convenient," he said.

Not really satisfied with the gained results, in recent meetings, leaders of the Provincial Party Committee and Provincial People's Committee continued to direct departments, branches and localities to accelerate the digital transformation in the state environment, while simultaneously performing activities to assist enterprises in implementing digital transformation. Accordingly, the digital transformation needs to be implemented synchronously and comprehensively across industries, fields and localities, ensuring that people and businesses are always the first beneficiaries.

Nguyen Tran Anh Mai, an accountant of a private company based in Thu Dau Mot city, said that since the tax agency allows periodic tax declaration and submission of corporate financial statements through the web portal system, her work pressure has reduced a lot compared to before. Instead of having to search, store paper records for tax declarations and periodic financial statements, now she just needs to keep soft files on computer. In addition to tax declaration and financial statement, currently 90% of her accounting work are done on computers and office applications, accounting applications.

In the digital transformation process, which is being carried out extensively and widely, people also expressed their joy at the new conveniences in daily life. Nguyen Tan Trung, a resident of Chanh Nghia ward, Thu Dau Mot City, said that instead of keeping cash or gold at home as before, his family now chooses to deposit it in a bank and use it flexibly through digital banking services. His family favour making online payment instead of cash as before for their shopping and entertainment activities.  “Digital banking services, e-wallets, online payments are helping my family reduce the pressure from preserving and protecting assets and experience a better life,” Trung said.

With a high determination, efforts of the entire political system, business community and people, the Smart City project has brought some good results. The recognition of the international community, the recognition of the Government and Central ministries and branches have proved the correctness of Binh Duong’s development strategy. The smart city is gradually revealed, thereby, once again honoring the pioneering spirit and bravery of Binh Duong people in the process of building and developing the hometown to become more beautiful, civilized, intelligent, and worth living.
