The Washington Post and the New York Times were the top winners of the prestigious Pulitzer prizes in 2010, which were announced by Columbia University in New York on Monday.

The four Pulitzers received by the Washington Post were in the categories of international reporting, feature writing, commentary and criticism.

The New York Times was awarded for its explanatory reporting and national reporting. The American daily newspaper still holds a record of seven Pulitzers won in 2002 for its coverage of issues related to the Sept. 11 terrorists attacks and to the financial markets.

The Herald Courier of Bristol, Va., won the Pulitzer Prize for public service for its reporting on the "murky mismanagement of natural gas royalties owed to thousands of landowners in Virginia. "

ProPublica, a non-profit news service, won one of two prize awarded for investigative reporting, with its story that " chronicles the urgent life-and-death decisions" made by doctors at a New Orleans hospital during Hurricane Katrina. The story was done in collaboration with The New York Times Magazine.

The Philadelphia Daily News won the other prize for investigative reporting for exposing "a rogue police narcotics squad."

The prize for breaking news reporting went to the Seattle Times for its coverage of the shooting deaths of four police officers in a coffee shop and the 40-hour manhunt for the suspect.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel went away with the Pulitzer for local reporting for its stories on the fraud and abuse in a child- care program for low-wage working parents.

The Dallas Morning News, SFGate.com, the San Francisco Chronicle website, and the Des Moines Register were the winners in the categories of editorial writing, editorial cartooning and breaking-news photography respectively.

The Pulitzers, the most coveted awards in U.S. journalism, are given out annually by Columbia University on the recommendation of a 19-member board.
