Advantages of free coastal economic area

 

Seaport, an advantage of Vietnam.

Vietnam has more than 3,200km of coastal line with 50 estuaries spreading across nationwide, especially deep water ports leading in the world of Cam Ranh, Van Phong and so on. Vietnam with long coastal line linking with the int’l maritime road is considered as an advantage for its economic growth.

Vietnam has an advantage of adjoining East-West aviation intersection, locating at the hub of the East Asia region, the world’s most dynamic region.

Until now, many research works on free economic area have had 5 crucial elements for the area’s success.

First, nations intending to build free economic areas should have high political determination. The determination lies in selection of human resources having high enthusiasm to the country and having determination on setting out an administrative and socio-economic structure keeping pace with int’l structure, establishing a transparent, modern management system.

Second, nations must select advantaged positions of having int’l ports and advantaged traffic system with int’l maritime road, adjoining key traffic routes, economic zones.

Third, advantaged domestically environment will show stable socio-economic and political situation, int’l integration must be a key trend, exchange between free economic areas and domestically economy must be transparent.

Fourth, int’l relation development must have friendly partner ties with all nations.

Fifth, an abundant human resource in quantity is an advantaged factor.

Vietnam is likely to need to build the following forms of free economic areas: general free economic area, int’l urban areas, free ports, free trade centers, open economic areas.

At present, Vietnam has built 15 coastal economic zones, over 200 industrial parks, border economic zones but in reality it has not yet had any open economic zone. ‘We need to assess solutions to turn the zones into open economic zones in line with free economic zone’s standards. This will take advantage of geographical advantages of the country’s coastal line’, said Ph.D Vo Dai Luoc.
