The Can Tho bridge, a cable-stayed bridge spanning the Hau River that connects southern Can Tho City with Vinh Long Province stretches 2,750 meters long, spans 23.1 meters wide, and has four lanes for traffic and two for pedestrians.
When opening to traffic, the Can Tho bridge will be the longest main span cable-stayed bridge in Southeast Asia with total investment of around VND4.84 trillion, of which about 85 percent was funded through Japanese ODA and the remaining amount from the Vietnamese Government.
Building the Can Tho bridge not only makes great contributions to the improvement of the Mekong Delta region’s infrastructure at the transportation demand, but also facilitates Vietnam’s application of the advanced bridge-building technology to serve the country’s socio-economic development.
Addressing the ground-breaking ceremony for the Can Tho bridge on September 25, 2004, former PM Phan Van Khai also said: “Building the Can Tho bridge is the great determination of the Vietnamese Government, helping the Mekong Delta fly high”.
Along with the My Thuan bridge, the Can Tho bridge will be a driving force for the Mekong Delta region’s development. It is expected that the bridge will be inaugurated on April 24, which bring the local residents great delight.
