Previously, most of Vietnamese consumers liked imported products for their quality and pattern. However, domestic products overwhelm Tet market because local consumers realize their quality and reasonable price.
90% of customers choose domestic products
Domestic confections are flooding the market of products for Tet. Tu Le Lan, a small trader in Lai Thieu market said Vietnamese consumers are turning their backs on imported products after the melamine scandal. Besides, products with unclear origins have been weeded from shelves and boycotted by consumers, so many small traders focus on domestic products.

Numerous domestically-made products are on display at supermarkets.
Food hygiene and safety is also a great attention for customers. Therefore, 95% of domestically-made products such as confections, canned foodstuff, wine and so on are selling well. This time is a golden opportunity for high quality products. ‘After scandals of the quality of some goods, our supermarket this year minimizes to display imported products and goods produced by small workshops and gives priority for displaying high quality Vietnamese products’, said vice director of Vinatex.Similarly, domestic products can be seen in abundance at Citimart Binh Duong. In the past years, confectionery products with trademarks from Indonesia, Thailand, China and Malaysia and so on overwhelmed domestic market but now 90% of Vietnam-made products are on display at the supermart.
Customers should beware ‘3-nought’ products
A boom of purchasing power on Tet will appear from now till Tet. This is a good chance for products with unclear origins. There are still unensured products on the shelves of shops. Most of the products are 3-nought items (without expiry date, without address and without trademark).
Moreover, some products of confectionery and jam are labeled vaguely, triggering confusion for consumers. Therefore, customers should select products with clear origins and expiry date.
