Russia becomes promising market for tra, basa exports

Russia has emerged as one of the 10 largest importers of tra and basa fish from Viet Nam, with turnover expected to reach US$100 million this year, according to an agriculture official.

The volume of Vietnamese tra and basa fish exports to Russia surged sharply although these products have only been permitted to enter the market since June 2009, said Duong Ngoc Minh, head of the Management Department of Aquatic Product Exports to Russia.

More domestic businesses will be allowed to ship fish to Russia, while a number of new products introduced, making it an attractive and reliable market, according to experts.

To reach this year's target, local enterprises should focus on improving the quality of products and reducing the rate of ice used in the fish to add weight to 15 per cent from a current 30 per cent, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Luong Le Phuong suggested.

Purchasing and processing establishments must ensure food hygiene and safety and have preservation facilities in accordance with their capacity, Phuong added.

Viet Nam is expected to produce 1.5 million tonnes of material tra and basa fish this year, processing 600,000 tonnes for export and 100,000 tonnes for the domestic consumption. The nation is estimated to earn $1.5 billion from tra and basa fish exports.

Last year, it earned a total export value of $70 million from the tra and basa fish exports.
