Lai Thieu chopping-board exported

Wooden chopping board is an indispensable device in every family. In Lai Thieu chopping board village in Thuan An district, wooden chopping board is a best-selling device on Tet. Lai Thieu wooden chopping board now caters for not only domestic market but foreign one.

Workers at the Lai Thieu chopping board village are busy with creating satisfactory products for housewives. Earlier, the village’s wooden chopping board was dominated by Thailand products. However the imported products were thin and fragile, so customers have been interested in the traditional wooden chopping board, owing to its reasonable price and advantage. Therefore, Lai Thieu wooden chopping board is revived.

Visiting Mr. La Hoang Dung’s chopping board workshop in Lai Thieu township, tens of workers are cutting, planing, whittling chopping boards. Dung said that the chopping board village has been born for more than half a century. To win a good chopping board, workers must select wood from khaya then dry them… and to get eye-catching products, workers must whittle them by hand.

Earlier, a household only produced about 15 chopping boards per day but now over 200 items per day, thanks to mechanism. However, workers have to arrive in provinces of Tay Ninh, Binh Phuoc and so on to seek materials for making chopping boards. Despites difficulties, the village’s laborers have still adhered to the craft. At present, the village has provided market tens of thousands of chopping boards.

Lai Thieu township now has 30 chopping board workshops and other small households, placing jobs for numerous laborers. Dung added each chopping board prices at VND20-30,000 whilst boards for export price at VND50,000 per item. Over 2% of product at Dung’s workshop is for export.

Aside from Dung’s workshop, the township is home to the Phu Long Handicraft Workshop that its products have been exported to the US, Taiwan and so on with the export revenue of millions of US$ per year. Since the start of this year, Phu Long has exported as many as 40,000 chopping boards. Phu Long Handicraft Workshop is one of factories owning a showroom in HCMC.

Along roads in the township, thousands of chopping boards are exposed to the sun, promising fruitful results for making wooden chopping boards in the locality.
