Rice exports likely to reach over 7 million tonnes

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam has decided to raise forecast figures for exports of some major agricultural products, especially rice, with a forecast export volume of 7.1-7.4 million tonnes of rice in 2011.

In the first quarter of 2011, Vietnam exported more than 1.8 million tonnes of rice, worth USD 844 million, recording the largest volume and value since 1989.

Currently, Vietnam is among the world’s largest rice exporters. From 2005 to 2010, the country’s total rice export turnover reached USD 11.9 billion with an average export cost of USD 375 a tonne.

Together with rice exports in 2011, the ministry also forecast the export value of other commodities such as: seafood at USD 5.7-5.8 billion, rubber at over USD 3 billion and coffee at USD 2.6 billion.
