Based on the local overal planning to 2020 with a vision to 2030, the general goals of the Thu Dau Mot urban development program for the 2011-2015 period have been basically completed, greatly contributing to the local socio-economic development.
In the period of 2015-2020, Thu Dau Mot city continued promoting the construction of the city towards civilization, prosperity beauty and modernity. Accordingly, the city mobilized resources to focus on investing in building infrastructure and urban rejuvenation works, contributing to upgrading the urban image of the province, effectively serving people’s production and life. From that, Thu Dau Mot was recognized as a first-class city in late 2017. Compared with 59 criteria prescribed for first-class urban classification, Thu Dau Mot has 37 criteria exceeding the maximum level of the requirement (63%) with a score of 92.34/100 points, in which there are many criteria on technical and social infrastructure.

Currently, the city has 1 unfulfilled criterion (funeral house) and 19 criteria at low level. In the coming time, the city will strive to complete first-class urban criteria. Specifically, the city will further recheck and complete its unfulfilled and low-level criteria; invest in and attract investment projects in urban-level infrastructure works related to urban quality such as culture, education, health...; make infrastructure rejuvenation, especially in terms of traffic and drainage infrastructure, call for investment in a number of large commercial and service projects to improve urban quality.
Recently, provincial People's Committee has submitted the Report No. 4396/TTr-UBND dated September 8, 2020 to the Prime Minister to request the policy of adjusting Thu Dau Mot’s overal urban planning. On that basis, the city is adjusting the planning of 1/2000 functional zoning of 12 wards along with synchronous adjustment of land use planning, supplementing the planning of roads connecting traffic with Thuan An city through Thuan Giao, An Thanh and An Son wards.
Provincial People's Committee also issued the Decision No.3844/QDUBND dated December 28, 2018 on adjusting the land use planning of Thu Dau Mot city until 2020 as a basis for the State management of land and development orientation in the coming time while calling for investors to get involved in housing development. Accordingly, many commercial residential areas, high-rise apartment buildings have been deployed with a higher scale and quality compared to the previous period, contributing to increasing the city’s ratio of the average floor area at 20.4 squ.m/person in 2016. The figure was estimated at 40.5 squ.m/person in 2020 in accordance with the criteria of first-class city.
