The two sides agreed to extend the validity of the agreement, which dates back to 2003, until March 31, 2012. They will also loosen current regulations on air transport to facilitate a boost in airline operations, especially in cargo transportation.

United Airlines and Northwest Airlines are providing direct services on the Vietnam-US air routes, besides FedEx cargo transportation services.

United Airlines launched flights between San Francisco and HCM City via Hong Kong since December 2004, while Northwest Airlines has operated flights between Los Angeles and HCM City via Tokyo since June 2009.

Other Vietnamese and US airlines such as Vietnam Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Airlines are providing indirect services between the two countries through code-sharing contracts with carriers of third countries and territories like Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and France.

Vietnam Airlines has been preparing for direct service to the US by extending its route from Vietnam to Tokyo.
